A large fraction of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found at former manufactured gas plants (MGP), wood treating facilities, leaking underground storage tanks, and surface spills are aromatic hydrocarbons. Aromatics include molecules such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The BTEX and PAH compounds are of particular interest due to their relatively high toxicity.
