ArSLID®

ImageThe ARSLID® monitor is a portable instrument that directly detects total aromatic concentrations in real-time. ARSLID® is based on resonance enhanced laser ionization, which greatly increases both the specificity and sensitivity for aromatic compounds compared to conventional photoionization detectors (PIDs).

A large fraction of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found at former manufactured gas plants (MGP), wood treating facilities, leaking underground storage tanks, and surface spills are aromatic hydrocarbons. Aromatics include molecules such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The BTEX and PAH compounds are of particular interest due to their relatively high toxicity. ArSLID® is particularly sensitive to naphthalenes, a species of PAH that is currently the focus of attention by researchers and regulators alike.
